A packed schedule of activities is on offer in Wells Library later this month to celebrate its re-opening.

Wells Library has been closed since January 21 to enable the installation of high-tech self-service equipment which has proved successful in other libraries across Somerset.

The library will be open for business again from 9am on Thursday, February 21. An official ribbon cutting ceremony will take place on February 23 with Wells City Councillor and Council leader John Osman, assisted by youngsters from the local reading club, Wells Bookworms.

A wide range of activities will be on offer throughout the day including a WI coffee morning, a celtic harpist performance and book readings by children's authors.

Councillor Osman said: "I'm delighted that Wells library has benefited from this investment."

"Self-service allows staff to concentrate on helping people get the most from their library and it's great to see the range of activities that have been arranged for the opening weekend and beyond."

The self-service technology means library users can use an individual membership card and PIN to borrow and return books, DVDs and other materials for themselves using easy to use touch screen kiosks.

Those who do not have a PIN, has forgotten it or wants to change it, can ask a member of library staff or telephone 0845 345 9177.

Councillor Osman added: "Staff will be on hand to help people get to grips with the new technology."

"We've already successfully introduced self-service in Taunton, Burnham-on-Sea and Bridgwater libraries and I'm sure it will prove just as successful in Wells."
