Local electors will have the chance to go to the polls next month in a Wells City Council election.

Following the tragic death of Independent Wells City Councillor, John Mitchell, from the St Cuthbert's Ward of Wells City Council, residents have called for an election to be held.

Friends of John Mitchell paid tribute to his life last month. The former Mayor of Wells, Graham Livings described him as "an extraordinary man who was fiercely independent".

He added: "With John there was no humbug and he got straight to the issues. He was a former guardsman and always had the straight back of a soldier. He was also an accomplished artist."

Now an election must be held to fill Mr Mitchell's position at the St Cuthbert's Ward of Wells City Council.

Nominations for councillors can still be made but must be submitted by Friday 15 February 2013.

Nomination papers can be obtained from the Election Office at Mendip Council Offices, Cannards Grave Road, Shepton Mallet. The papers must be submitted in this same office between the hours of 9am and 4.30pm.

If an election is contested, the poll will take place on Thursday, 14 March 2013.

For more information on voting contact Wells City Council or Mendip District Council.
