GEMS Scrapstore & Play Resource Centre based in Wells has made an

amendment to their policy of scrap purchases and are throwing open their

doors to the general public to buy materials without need for a

membership.

The Scrapstore offers a huge range of materials and resources which have

come from industry and manufacturing but would be destined for landfill

sites. The charity, which is widely used by groups from across Mendip,

Sedgemoor, BANES and North Somerset, sells the scrap to those with an

interest in art, craft, education and play. Memberships mean a reduced

rate of scrap purchases, with groups and individuals able to fill a

carrier bag for £3.50 or load a shopping trolley for just £13.50.

Members of the public will now be able to walk in off the street and fill a carrier bag for £6, without need of a membership.

Manager Laura Kavanagh said:

'We want to encourage more individuals and families to come and make use

of the materials but realise the membership system can be off-putting.

Membership is good for frequent users of the Scrapstore and larger

institutions such as schools, as the savings over a year make it much

more cost effective. But we also have many people coming in who just

want to buy some materials occassionally so we have listened to their

needs and acted accordingly'.
