The Wells Mile challenge – New Year's Eve is as good an opportunity to attempt it as any!

2011 in Wells saw the sad closure of the Mermaid and Globe pubs and the Full Moon is also still silently thirsting behind closed doors awaiting its re-opening soon, so surely the best way for you and your friends to ensure that you support all of the pubs in Wells is by generously sacrificing your own sobriety and attempting to have a drink in each of them?!

The order you tackle them is entirely up to you but I can recommend starting with the Britannia Inn to avoid having to wobble up-hill if you leave it to the end!

Following a bracing walk down St Thomas Street, you could have a sharpener at The Fountain Inn before walking past the historic Vicar's Close & Cathedral Green, watch-out for those cobbles, note ladies (and gentleman), this is a night to leave your stilettos at home.

The cheery bar staff at The Crown await your order and then it's only a short walk across the road to the lively vibe at the King's Head.

I'm anticipating you might be nicely warmed-up by now and a trot to the City Arms and Rose & Crown should really flow with liquid ease. A quenching stop at the Sun Inn could follow.

Excuse me for being mother for a minute but don't forget to wrap-up well and take-on lots of high protein & carbohydrate snacks to reduce the effects of the alchofrol, there are still two watering holes to go to complete the circuit!

Time for a visit to the unsung hero of well-kept ale in Wells, the simple splendour of the Cheddar Valley Inn before the final leg – The Sherston Inn.
