Wells parents keeping up with internet safety for their children
Today (Tuesday February 7) a new film is being launched by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre - the UK's national centre for child protection to try and encourage parents to overcome any fears they have of the web and their children's use of technology.
'The Parents' and Carers' Guide to the Internet' shows that while the risks to children may be different to those of the past, parenting skills remain the same. Talking to children about their online lives is one of the best things parents can do to protect them.
Technology has transformed all our lives, the way we work, communicate and socialise. It is also an integral part of modern childhood that many parents don't quite understand.
The film and dedicated site explains how to talk to your child about pornography on the internet, the difference between real and online friends or what to do when something goes wrong? The answers to these and other difficult but vital questions will be part of the Guide.
Avon and Somerset police is supporting the initiative through PC Alan Earl, he said: "Connecting generations the theme of this years Safer Internet Day focuses on the conversations between children and young people and adults of all ages and the importance of enabling parents and grandparents to understand both the positives and negatives that the internet holds.
"Empowering adults to help keep their children safe and savvy on line is of most importance."
'The Parents' and Carers' Guide to the Internet' takes an entertaining and light hearted look at what it's like to bring up children in the online age – featuring practical tips, insights into what your child is up to online and a few surprises along the way.
