Shame for me though...

I use a computer more than I do my vocal chords unfortunately, and consume coffee to augment my cyber activities. I can see their point if you compare the buzzing community atmosphere to the insular activities of folks in a big city Starbucks. For me though, Im only likely to go into a coffee shop on my own if I can flip open my laptop and be productive. I don't buy newspapers, I use online services. Its the future (I hear Peter Kaye in my head!). The NEAGEAR SSID was closed and I was polite enough not to hack it :)

    proud to not have WiFi

When I looked this company up on the internet, they used their lack of wifi as a selling point so I think you may have just happened upon a private unprotected router? Bad news for their bandwidth as it's possible that other customers tap-in unaware that it's not an official service?

A great locally owned coffee shop that is up there with the big chains

It felt a little surreal when I realized that one of the strong points of this locally owned coffee shop (according to sign in the window) was how much it is 'like' but not the same as the "big two" (Starbucks and Costa - lets not beat about the coco bush). Great service and a buzzing atmosphere. I didn't see an SSID for open wifi which I would really suggest they set up (there was a NETGEAR one, which might be it, but it wasn't advertised). If there was free wifi I could work there all day and happily consume a gallon or two of their superb latte's. Choose this over the chain one up the street!
