Wells election results round-up

Wells voters have had their say and the results are all in

for the district and city council elections.

The Conservatives have taken charge of Mendip after seizing

enough seats to take control of the district council, and the Wells results threw

up a few surprises.

The main upset was in Wells St Thomas’ ward. Even though

Liberal Democrat Danny Unwin took the highest number of votes – a result

expected by many – relative newcomer Andy Denison took the second seat for the

Conservatives, beating established Tory candidate Simon Davies and Liberal

Democrat stalwart Roy Mackenzie.

In Wells St Cuthbert’s Conservative John Osman took an

expected seat, but fellow Tory and council leader Harvey Siggs fought off the

challenge of Labour’s Colin Price and the Lib Dem Norman Kennedy, when many had

expected him to struggle due to him being associated with the library cutbacks.

John North took the Wells Central ward for the Tories,

beating Lib Dem Denise Boulton into a distant second place.

The city council results also featured a few surprises

particularly in the St Thomas’ ward, where recent mayor, Conservative Christina

Borastero, failed to get elected.

Fellow Tories David Anderson, Simon Davies and Andy Denison

were elected, as were the Lib Dems Theo Butt Philip, current mayor Tony Robbins

and Danny Unwin, the latter two taking the highest number of votes.

In St Cuthbert’s ward, John Osman won, but the real news was

Chris Briton taking a seat for the Green Party. Also elected were Harvey Siggs,

Colin Price and Norman Kennedy.

Independent John Mitchell took the other seat leaving established

Conservatives Bobby Anderson and John Parkes without seats.

Things were more straightforward in the Wells Central ward,

with Tories Maureen Brandon, John North and Alison Gibson taking seats along

with Lib Dem Gordon Wilson. However, the Green Party’s Jennifer Linsdell was

not far behind.

What do you think of the results in Wells? Any surprises stand

out for you? Post your thoughts below…
