Years of fighting has finally paid off for safety campaigners in Westfield.

Bath and North East Somerset Council has announced it intends to put a zebra crossing on the A367 Wells Road in Westfield.

Councillor Rob Appleyard is delighted with the news. He said: “This is excellent. We have been asking for a zebra crossing for some years now. It will make it so much safer for children and pensioners crossing the road.”

The A367 is a principal road and one of the main commuter routes into Bath. It carries about 7,000 vehicles per day, including a large number of heavy goods vehicles.

The council carried out a week-long survey in January 2009. It revealed that a large number of pedestrians were crossing the road near its junction with Maple Drive – on average 280 a day.

In a statement the council said: “The majority of them walk to and from the residential area of Waterford Park to access the shops that lie on the opposite side of the A367, particularly the convenience store and fish and chip shop.”

Mr Appleyard said he expected the work to begin later this month
