The minister in charge of broadband has been urged to consider the county for a super-fast version of the service.
Ed Vaisey, Parliamentary Under-Secretary in charge of telecommunications, had the importance of Somerset & Devon Local Enterprise Partnership’s bid for super-fast broadband underlined by MP Tessa Munt on Monday.
The Wells MP called the service vital and said: “Super-fast broadband will allow both businesses and the public sector to be more efficient, effective and to prosper.
“A successful bid would also help us to become a greener economy – enabling people to work from home or remotely much more easily.”
The meeting touched upon people needing a reliable internet to find and apply for jobs, along with employers using the internet to recruit.
On top of this is cuts to the library service, which offers internet-connected computers.
After the meeting, Ms Munt said: “I welcome this joint bid, but hope the Conservative county council considers how it will make super-fast broadband available and accessible to all.”
