Homeowners throughout Shepton Mallet are part of a pilot scheme collectively saying 'no' to cold-callers with the introduction of three Cold Calling Alert Zones in the town.

The zones are designated areas where residents want to discourage cold callers from knocking on their doors. Residents in these areas will be vigilant for cold callers in their neighbourhoods and will report them to police who may attend and ensure they have a legitimate reason for being in the area.

If the system proves sucessful it may be rolled-out to Wells and surrounding vilages. The zones have been launched by the police in partnership with other organisations including Somerset County Council, trading standards and the Safer Homes Partnership.

Cold Calling Alert Zones help to reduce crime by discouraging rogue traders from calling at houses. They can also reduce burglaries and distraction burglaries as criminals sometimes use doorstep selling to identify vulnerable homes to target.

Clearly marked by street signs and stickers by residents' doors, communities in the zones are given advice on how to deal with unwanted callers. Anyone choosing to ignore the signs will be told at all houses they call at that they are in the zone and that residents will not do business with cold callers.

Cold Calling Alert Zones can be set up anywhere but provide valuable support to neighbourhoods which are elderly, isolated or experiencing a high level of burglary or rogue trading.

Speaking at the launch of the zones, PCSO Penny Freestone said: "These zones give people the confidence to say no to cold callers. It reassures residents while also deterring cold callers from visiting their neighbourhoods. As well as making people feel safer it can help reduce crime and avoid the trauma often felt by victims returning home to find valuable and sentimental items stolen.

"I am really pleased to launch these three zones and hope to launch other zones soon. Crime remains low in Shepton Mallet and these zones will help us to keep it that way. If anyone wants to start a scheme in their community I would love to hear from them."
