Wells Cathedral welcomes charity supporters

Wells Cathedral, possibly the most beautiful of the English cathedrals, was the setting for a recent reunion of Sailors' Society supporters and volunteers. 120 guests attended this occasion which was to thank them for their continuing support and long service.

Revd David Potterton, the Society's Principal Chaplain, led a service of thanksgiving, together with the Chancellor of the Cathedral, Canon Andrew Featherstone. Chief Executive Officer, Robert Adams, spoke about the work of the charity and shared experiences of the charity's international network of Port Chaplains. He also highlighted how the charity is able to provide practical and spiritual support to isolated seafarers across the world.

Revd David Potterton said: "Giving thanks to God for the remarkable work of our supporters was the priority of our day together. Being together in the Quire of the Cathedral provided a wonderful setting for our service, during which I was pleased to explain more of the everyday work of our Port Chaplains."

Those who attended said it was a wonderful opportunity to meet people from the Sailors' Society, as some find it difficult to attend the Society's annual service in London. Many believed they now had a greater understanding of the ministry of Sailors' Society Port Chaplains and how valued their support is by them, some as far away as Brazil and Indonesia. It was a successful day which will be repeated in September this year. Staff from the Society's Head Office in Southampton were delighted to thank so many supporters and volunteers for the sterling work they do.
