It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing

Did you know that a lot of musicians from Wells play in the area’s best-kept musical secret?

Shepton Mallet Big Band has been delighting audiences with its toe-tapping, dance-inspiring repertoire for over 20 years.
As its fantastic musical director is approaching his 80th birthday, he’s made the difficult decision to hand the baton over to a new maestro and if you’ve always wanted to front a band of cool-cats, now’s your chance!
The band has been lead by John Fowler since its inception and he is very keen that a new heir to the throne be found because the thought of disbanding at the close of 2010 if no-one comes forward would be a bitter disappointment for both him and the enthusiastic players. He said “I sincerely hope someone will come forward and take the reins. Nothing would please me more than to be able to sit and listen to future performances under the direction of my replacement.”
I can vouch for the friendliness the band exudes because I am the one sat at the 2nd trumpet desk putting all the mis-pitched notes in! It’s a very entertaining medium and it’s abundantly clear to audiences that the band enjoy each performance as much as they do.
If you would like to give the role a try, contact John Fowler on 01749 342440
Good luck and we look forward to meeting you.
