I hate litter bugs and am still traumatized from the time and old lady on Bath Spa Uni campus threatened to fine me because 'I had just dropped litter'. Turns out Id dropped my last fiver! I wonder if its a coincidence that most of the waste in question is either alcohol vessels or food consumed by 'human alcohol vessels'? (I am NOT suggesting banning booze or boozed up food...I exist for those things!!)
Harehey is mistaken - he says the Glastonbury Festival is the worst festival for rubbish - in fact it is the best, as an avid rubbish collector (much like mendipmortgag) I can finds loads of useful litter to add to my collection.
Having said that plastic cups etc are not allowed on site, and the traders must use recyclable or reuseable cups/plates etc as a condition of their pitch. The main problem is people are just lazy, careless and don't give a toss (or do give a toss in the case of rubbish) about their environment.
The first person to drop a piece of rubbish takes a small risk that he/she will be noticed and from previous experience they assume that it is unlikely anyone will say anything to him/her. They certainly are not going to be shamed into picking it up. The second person joins in and from then on who will notice and who cares.! I can honestly say that I don't drop rubbish on the floor, ever; in fact I remember a keep Britain Tidy campaign which was run probably 30 years ago when I think that there was less packaging and takeaway food that there is now. I collect plastic bottles and cans on my way through our village just because I hate seeing litter spoiling our countryside, but I certainly wouldn't start picking up the mess that is pictured or dubious carrier bags that people fill will rubbish, tie up and then sling out of their car windows..
Are you kidding, at Glastonbury festival it's the done thing to get as much packaging as you can with every purchase, plus more rubbish to help you carry it back to your personal pile of refuse and build it higher! Its probably the worse festival I've ever been to for rubbish! We've been saying for years the organisers should get the vendors to use reusable packaging! Have deposits on plastic glasses and generally make it less cool to drop everything on the floor!
I can honestly say when I was young enough to last the whole festival, I was generally in no fit state to make such observations! Actually I suppose you're right, some try, some don't.... So what's the solution?
By the way, you know me well enough now as friends, you can drop the extra 'c' if you like, I couldn't be bothered with it years ago! ;0) lol
