Yesterday I had the great pleasure of a debut visit to the Old Down Inn. What an exciting experience it was - any expectations I had about what to expect were shattered. The premises are indeed roomy, excitingly decorated and as the person above says, very different to your average Mendips watering hole. The beer comes straight from cask and is in excellent condition and the atmosphere was very friendly. The bargain lunch menu at £4.95 was very varied and offered plenty of choice and the ham, egg & chips (twice-cooked chips for perfect crunch, delicious home-cooked ham in generous quality) and tasty chicken madras were so good I felt compelled to ask our lovely hostess how on earth the pub was able to offer such amazing value. A contender for Rural Pub of the Year here I'd say...... catch you there!
Beautiful building that looks more like a grand house than a local boozer, but thankfully it is (otherwise I would have been in trouble for wandering in and demanding alcohol). The bar has some very well kept beers and some well chosen wines including a great merlot. The food is fantastic: well presented, piping hot, well cooked using good quality ingredients, and well priced. The service in general was great, and both the staff and the space itself were clean and well presented. Superb.
