Shepton Mallet  0 - 4 Wells City

After a fifty year gap, followed by just a second season back in the Western League, Wells City have been promoted to the top tier of the Western League.

The 4-0 defeat of local rivals Shepton Mallet on Saturday confirmed Wells City’s promotion and if they can beat Shepton once again on Tuesday evening, they will go up as champions of the first division.

Last season Shepton did the double over Wells City, but on the evidence of Saturday’s game, it is Wells who have made alarming progress over the last twelve months leading to a convincing win.

The scoreline certainly justified Wells City’s dominance over the 90 minutes.  Shepton Mallet have once again had a difficult season and they were not helped on Saturday as they were missing several key players, including goalkeeper Liam McFarlane who has arguably been Shepton’s stand out player this season.

Tim Moxey had a full squad available for Wells and goals came from Ian Howse, Jake Brown, Ross Mcerlain and Nathan Truckle.

A delighted Tim Moxey said after the game “I thought we played very, very well today and to secure promotion was a huge bonus.  We have been close to promotion for some time and it’s a huge relief to get over the finishing line.  We now have to hope we can clinch the championship on Tuesday”.

Wells are at home this evening to Shepton & kick-off is at 19:45

Absolutely! I think that puts them up there with Street in the top teams in the area. Does anyone know the result of the latest game? I doubt Shepton would have been happy at losing 4-0... a bit of revenge perhaps?
