Eerily written a year to the day before the event is announced to finish in Wells on September 16th, Wells People wrote this article speculating whether local business might support the council in stumping-up the required £2000 sponsorship money required.

The great news is that the Tour organisers, fully aware of the financial burden on local councils this year, have said that no financial contribution is necessary, only that the City must supply stewards, a press office and police support in order for Wells to stage the exciting sprint finish concluding the Tour’s route through the West Country.

The event has been growing in popularity steadily and the 2010 route was considered the most challenging in years with 16 professional teams being stretched to the limit over the 8-day event.

The exact details of this year’s route remains a closely-guarded secret but it is known that it takes place over the 11th – 18th September, departing from Scotland and finishing in Whitehall.

Hugh Roberts, Chief Executive of SweetSpot Group commented:

“As Britain’s biggest professional cycle race and this country’s largest free-to-spectate sporting event it is important that we finish with an iconic finale, and as we showed in 2008 and 2009 there is no better place than at the heart of London.

Top names are also confirming participation and it is clear that Wells will get to enjoy top atheletes in action, powering past huge crowds in an atmosphere which is guaranteed to be electric.

It’s not just about the cream of International cycling being on display, it’s also your chance to follow in the wheel tracks of the professionals and ride stages from The Tour of Britain as part of its partnership with The Prostate Cancer Charity.  Go to www.tourride.co.uk to find out more!

The is the best news I've heard for ages! It is going to be an amazing day, so many people are going to pile in on the morning and then stay in town overnight, the place is going to be buzzing! I've spectated on the event for the last two years and it is quite a sight, even for the non-cycling fan. I wait with baited breath to find out the exact route so I can plan my viewing spot...
