Wells’ winter strategy for keeping warm

In weather like this, thoughts turn to the more vunerable members of our community, especially the elderly who might be living alone and who may need a bit of support from us to stay warm and well this winter.

Keep you & your home wrapped-up well
Mendip Council suggests the following tips to stay warm and don’t be reluctant to try to ensure our neighbours are trying them as much as possible because they might not read online much and may have recycled the leaflets which came before the cold weather hit.
Speak to flat management companies / relatives who can help to check your house is insulated properly. Somerset benefits from a project called Warm Streets which provides:
A basic home energy survey (SAP level 0)
Free cavity wall and loft insulation measures for those on Priority Group eligible benefits or over 70 or meeting council grant criteria (see link for details)
Significantly discounted (up to 50%) cavity wall and loft insulation for all other households
Heating system upgrades (for those on eligible benefits via referral to the Government’s Warm Front grant scheme)
Free benefits checks and assistance in making benefits claims when households are identified as eligible
They also suggest a number of personal steps including having at least one hot meal per day & plenty of hot drinks, keep moving if possible, don’t stay sat in one place all day, wear several layers of clothing which is far better than just one thick ayer and remember to keep bedroom windows shut.
The number to call to find out more about how to apply for a grant is free 0800 512 012
